State Park StreamGetting out and about with the family is a good way to spend time together and have fun too. If you’re in the Wheatland, Wyoming, area, there are several locations nearby where you can take the family for a good time you’ll always remember. Here are a few of our top choices.

Glendo State Park

Just north of Wheatland, you’ll find Glendo State Park. It’s in one of Wyoming’s most historic areas, and you can see artifacts, such as tipi rings, from the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Oglala, and Brule Sioux tribes that once inhabited the area. The park comprises around 22,000 acres — 12,000 of those acres are water, while the other 10,000 are land. This park is a great place to get the family out on the boat for a day of fishing, or bring your tent or RV and rent one of the 568 campsites. No matter what, you’re sure to have fun.

Guernsey State Park

Another nearby state park that’s perfect for an outing with the family is Guernsey State Park. It makes a great location for an overnight campout or a week under the stars. They have seven campgrounds to choose from, all offering comfort stations, drinking water, fire pits, and picnic tables. Five of the campgrounds are located on the lake, so you’ll have a great view from your campsite. Enjoy a family hike on over 10 miles of restored Civilian Conservation Corps trails. Other points of interest at the park are the Guernsey Museum, the castle, and Brimmer Point.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site

Fort Laramie National Historic Site is a fun, educational place to take the family. It was one of the largest and most well-known military posts on the Northern Plains, but it originated as a private fur trading fort back in 1834. While you’re here, you can hike the confluence trail. This 1.6-mile loop will take you through a mature gallery forest of cottonwood and willow trees, and you’ll see a wrought-iron bridge that dates back to around 1875. Make sure you stop by the visitor center to explore the exhibits and watch the short, informational video.

Grayrocks Reservoir

The Grayrocks Reservoir is a wonderful place to go to reconnect with nature and let the kids explore the outdoors. There are ample opportunities for outdoor recreation at the reservoir. Bring your boat so you can enjoy the scenery from the water, and don’t forget your fishing pole if you want to catch some walleye. If you don’t have a boat, just enjoy the water from the shore. Don your swimsuits for a day of swimming followed by a picnic. This is sure to create a day of memories the whole family will cherish.

When you’re looking for a great spot to enjoy some time with your family, head to any of these locations. Whether your family likes to camp, fish, swim, or all of the above, you can find opportunities to do what you love when you get out and explore all that these Wheatland places have to offer.
