Wheatland, WY has a lot of great features. But one of its best attributes is its beautiful natural surroundings. And with so many lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and other water sources in the area, it’s a real haven for keen fishermen. There are a wide variety of great fishing spots to choose from.

1. Wheatland Reservoirs

If you’re looking for some good fishing in the Wheatland area, your first stop should be the local reservoirs. There are 3 close to town, and each offers different fishing experiences. Reservoir Number 1 is the closest to downtown and has easy access by road.

Reservoirs 2 and 3 are a short distance further away from the 1st and a little smaller too. But they’re often quieter and are sometimes stocked with different fish. Try all 3 and see which one you prefer!

2. Rock Lake

A favorite spot in the local area, Rock Lake offers some seriously good fishing. Visitors can hope to catch a variety of fish, with largemouth bass, brook trout, perch, walleye, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and much more! This is a particularly well-stocked spot, so you’re likely to get a bite without waiting too long.

Located just 8 miles southwest of Wheatland, it’s just a short hop from town. The lake is located just a little way south of Wheatland Reservoir Number 1. There’s plenty of parking onsite.

3. Chugwater Creek

About 20 miles south of town, you’ll find Chugwater Creek. This pleasant spot is truly isolated, offering a relaxing, old-time fishing experience. You’ll find plenty of different fish here, including lots of trout. Access the creek off Slater Road.

4. Festo Lake

Another favorite local spot, Festo Lake is just a short drive from Wheatland. There are plenty of great spots for you to cast out your line and the lake is well stocked with a variety of fish. Catfish and largemouth bass are regular catches here, and more than a few whoppers have been snagged at this lake.

Since Festo Lake is so close to town and offers such great fishing, you might find it gets a little busy at certain times of year, especially in the warmer months. Be sure to arrive early to avoid disappointment!

5. Friend Creek

This peaceful creek is the place to be for those looking to catch plenty of rainbow trout. There’s also lots of wildlife in the area and if you’re lucky, you may spot a moose or a variety of waterfowl.

You’ll find Friend Creek about 30 miles northwest of town. Access is through the beautiful Friend Park. Although this spot is a little further away from others on the list, its peaceful atmosphere and abundance of trout mean it’s well worth the drive. Bring your boots and take a hike to find the perfect spot along the creek.
